Al van den Ende started iSPECS Inc. in 2006 to provide technical solutions in the design and manufacturing of electrical control panels as part of process control automation. One area of expertise iSPECS specializes in is automation and control services to the greenhouse industry. Based in Jordan, Ontario, iSPECS ships automation control panels to Canada, the United States and Mexico. Modern greenhouses have come a long way since the 1980s'. Commercial growers and researchers rarely even use soil for their growing media. They now use a sponge-like medium called Rockwool for Hydroponic growing.

This mineral, Rockwool, can contain large quantities of water and nutrient, which is constantly monitored and controlled for the optimum growing of flowers, vegetables and fruits. A modern greenhouse is controlled through a central computer system. These controls include temperature, humidity, CO2, fan and vent control, lighting, thermal and solar shading control, irrigation, fertilization and much more.

Because of today’s advanced control systems, hydroponic greenhouses can be located throughout the world in any environment from cold to hot. iSPECS designs and manufacturers control panels for these hydroponic greenhouses. These cULus approved control panels include computer hardware, pre-wired motor circuit controllers, contactors, computer/manual interface / override switch modules, control relays, control transformers, supplementary control circuit protectors and load centers (branch circuit breakers).

To combine and integrate all electrical controls and circuit breaker requirements in a few ‘easy to install’ panels simplifies the total electrical installation and will save money on the complete project. Advantages are:

  • Because of integration in one enclosure, the number of control panels to be installed in a greenhouse is minimized and the result is a neat and clean installation.

  • No configuration and inter-panel connections to do on site; easy installation.

  • Main power supply IN, sensor wiring IN, motor wiring OUT.

  • Operation of all functions is tested in the factory. Pre-tested system, minimizes installation and service time on site.

Of course, all detailed drawings of the complete system (including motor controls) are provided.

iSPECS purchases their important motor control components from Sprecher + Schuh in Canada. Included in their panels are KT7 Motor Controls, CA7 and CA8 Contactors, L8 and L9 circuit protection, L11 and L7 disconnect switches, and even a few softstarters. In the image shown are controls using eighteen KTA7 motor controllers and CA7 contactors for the automation of a greenhouse. Fourteen additional contactors control auxiliary equipment. L8 circuit protectors provide supplemental protection. All the components are mounted to DIN rail and assembled into a Type 4/4X double door enclosure. Outside controls are typically not necessary for the iSPECS panels because the controls are computer automated and controlled by the central software system.
